The club had to wait for the return to the upper house for over three decades. Now it worked – despite a defeat.

After 34 years, the city of the crooked tower has just moved the conditions again: the SC Pisa returns to the highest Italian division. Despite a 0-1 loss to the away game in Bari, the team of coach Filippo Inzaghi made the direct promotion to Serie A on the third last day of series B.

The premature jubilation became possible because pursuer Speiter Kalcio also lost 1-2 at AC Reggiana on Sunday. This means that Pisa can no longer be displaced from the second place in the table, which means the direct ascent. Table leader Sassuolo Calcio had previously secured return to series A. The clubs in ranks three to six determine the third promoted team in their own relegation round.

For the club from Tuscany, it is the return after a long dry spell. Pisa last played in Serie A in the 1990/91 season – at that time with the young Diego Simeone in midfield, who is now training Atlético Madrid. After the descent, difficult years followed with an interim crash to the fourth league.

The change came with a prominent name on the sidelines: Filippo Inzaghi took over the coaching office after 13th place in the past season. The former striker converted the team into a top team in a short time – and is now celebrated as a promotion hero in Pisa. There will be a special duel in the coming season: “Superpippo” will meet his brother Simone Inzaghi in Serie A, who is currently very successful with Inter Milan. As a player, Filippo was the larger number, as a trainer so far Simone has the edge. But with the rise of Pisa, the brother duel gets new charm.
