Scammer steals thousands of euros from elderly man in Someren

A scammer has taken his debit card and PIN code from an elderly man in Someren. And then steal thousands of euros from his account. But the victim was observant enough to take a recognizable photo of the perpetrator.

The man from Someren received a text message, supposedly from the bank, that his bank account had been subject to fraud. The message also included a request to contact the bank using the attached telephone number.

The man then got on the phone with a fake bank employee. He told him to put his card and PIN code in an envelope. Then someone from the bank would come by to solve the problems.

A typical case of so-called ‘spoofing’. A trick that many people, often the elderly, fall victim to. Criminals pose as employees of a bank, insurance company, government agency, an acquaintance or even family. The aim of the scammers is to extort personal data or a PIN code in order to get money.

It also happened to the elderly man in Someren. But he was brave enough to take a recognizable photo of the ‘bank employee’ at his front door. Although the scammer hid his face behind his jacket, the police received a clear photo of the perpetrator from the victim. Anyone who recognizes the perpetrator can call the police.
