There is no part of our fiscal and social security system that is so sensitive to the aging population that we now experience as the AOW. The General Old Age law was introduced in 1956 and on January 2, 1957 the first pensioner from Minister Suurhoff received his benefit. At that time, 8.6 percent of the population was 65 or older. Now 20.5 percent of the Dutch are 65 people and the percentage is increasing every year.
