RTL 4 star Beau van Erven Dorens has been writing a column about this and that for the AD for some time now. This time he talks about an afternoon out with nine friends from his student days. They went for a Christmas lunch to a seafood restaurant with a Mediterranean concept. And an ‘incredibly expensive’ concept too.

Beau is annoyed

Beau didn’t really enjoy Christmas lunch. He was really annoyed by the concept, where you – despite the very expensive menu – have to grab your own cutlery, for example. “I don’t like ‘concept’ restaurants,” he complains in his column in the weekend supplement Mezza.

The waiters there also fit in perfectly with the concept. For example, they all wear a dark T-shirt with a quasi-funny text on it. He also has a large straw hat in his hand. Why is not clear, but I suspect it is also part of the Mediterranean concept.”

Pathetic waiter

Beau feels sorry for that waiter and his hat. “He doesn’t feel comfortable with it, you can see that immediately. I think it’s pathetic. Someone said to him: ‘And then you take that straw hat and tell them what they’re going to eat.’ ‘But why?’ ‘Because uh… well, that’s Spanish… just do it.’”

That waiter had a hard time at the table with Beau and his friends. “My friends and I, we look at each other and we crack up.”

Fierce criticism

And that is precisely what the regular readers of Beau’s column cannot appreciate. They go into the comments section quite loose on the television star. For example, someone thinks that the gentlemen feel ‘obviously superior’ to a hard-working, ‘in your eyes therefore inferior’, waiter. “Really sad…”

The criticism of Beau is not tender. “What a pity that you and your ‘friends’ are so blatantly laughing at the waiter, despite it being clear to you that he is also uncomfortable. Not very high, Beau. I didn’t expect this from you.”

Mr. Frans is also angry with Beau. “Cheap Beau, a restaurant and hardworking waiters who earn minimum wage and can’t defend themselves. Would have rated you higher.”

Disrespectful

Steve finds it lamentably decadent. “It is not obligatory to go to that restaurant, is it?”

Paul points out that Beau chooses such a concept herself. “Nicely written, but then you just go to an overpriced restaurant with your ‘friends’. Go to one or another steakhouse, then the table is set and you also go home with a full stomach.”

And Blessing: “Dear Beau, it’s fine that you don’t like such restaurants. But could your criticism be a little less disrespectful?”
