The United States will not impose import tariffs and sanctions on Colombia after all, because the South American country has agreed to accept American flights carrying migrants. The White House reported on Sunday night that Colombia “has agreed to all conditions set by President Donald Trump.”
Moments later, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed that “the impasse with the US government has been broken.” According to Murillo, Colombia will again accept flights with deported migrants “under the guarantee that they will be treated with dignity and their rights as citizens will be respected.”
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro on Sunday refused to allow migrants to land in military aircraft. Trump then announced import duties of up to 50 percent on Colombian products.
The import duties have been lifted for now, but visa restrictions for Colombian government officials will remain in place “until the first plane carrying Colombian migrants has successfully returned,” the White House wrote.
