MIlano, 10 Apr. (askanews) – A journey through the underwater mountains to discover unexplored habitats, Thanks to a robot (ROV – Remotely Operated Vehicle – Work Class), capable of operating up to 2,000 meters deep. These images testify to what was collected in the first two months of exploration in the Sicily channel by the ISPRA project, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, “PNRR MARINE ECOSYSTEM Restoration (Wed) – A14 SEMOUNTS”.
The goal is the large scale mapping of 79 underwater mountains located beyond 12 miles from the Italian coast At a depth between 150 and 2000 meters and the collection of crucial data for the conservation of biodiversity and the assessment of geological risks.
The investigation confirmed the crucial role of the underwater mountains as biodiversity tanks, but also revealed the impact of human activity. Ghost and sea waste nets have also been identified at great depths.
