ZLM Tour back with Limburg stage as executioner | 1Limburg

Defending champion Mike Teunissen is missing, but cycling enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to this week in the ZLM Tour, which starts on Wednesday.

The five-day Dutch cycling race, which also visits Limburg, starts in Kapelle in Zeeland.

A 186 kilometer long stage from Heythuysen to Buchten is scheduled for Friday. Former cyclist Rob Ruijgh, who will provide commentary on the race together with Max van den Boorn on L1 TV in the coming days, expects spectacle. Also because of the narrow roads: “Foreign riders sometimes say that ‘we Dutchmen’ have forgotten a meter of asphalt.”

Cavendish and Teunissen
In the past two years, the ZLM Tour has been canceled due to the corona problem. The honors list of the years before is a nice one. For example, Mark Cavendish, Philippe Gilbert, André Greipel and Teunissen already took the overall victory.

That honors list already reveals that the sprinters in particular will get their money’s worth in the coming days. Only the ‘Limburg’ ride on Friday has an hilly character, including the Cauberg, Bemelerberg, Loorberg, Camerig and Eyserbosweg on the route. That stage will therefore be the executioner in the battle for the general classification.

Viviani, Degenkolb and Kooij
Top players on the start list are the Italian Elia Viviani and the German John Degenkolb. But with Jos van Emden, Sebastian Langeveld and Olav Kooij there are also appealing Dutch riders at the start. The latter is also seen as a contender to win the ZLM Tour.
