The English defender, who has been warned by a booking, will not be in Florence due to the celebration considered immoderate and excessive by the referee Mariani. He had already done it in the derby with Calhanoglu. The Inter player did the same against Verona without however being sanctioned by the referee
It’s now almost a vice for Fikayo Tomori: every time an opponent misses a penalty kick, AC Milan’s English defender has gotten into the habit of showing off all his satisfaction ‘in the face’ of his rival. A way to release the adrenaline of the match? Perhaps. But certainly not an example of sportsmanship, so much so that yesterday – after Stanciu’s mistake and the consequent wild celebration right in front of the Romanian – the Rossoneri was warned by referee Mariani. And it’s a very heavy mystery, given that, having been warned, he will miss the trip to Florence. AC Milan fans will remember, however, that this is not an unprecedented gesture on Tomori’s part: something very similar had already happened in the derby last November 23rd after Calhanoglu’s error from the spot. On that occasion the Rossoneri number 23 actually went looking for his former teammate – who ended up on the ground in an attempt to recover the ball following Maignan’s rebound – to throw all his satisfaction in his face. And in that case no warning from the referee Sozza.
Dimarco’s precedent
—
Then there is at least one other illustrious precedent (if we may say so) in the recent history of Italian football. January 2024, in the recovery of a very tense Inter-Verona, with the result 1-0, a penalty kick was awarded to the guests: Henry took charge of the serve and wrong-footed Sommer but hit the post squarely. Danger averted for the Nerazzurri with Dimarco (also a former member of the match) who immediately sprints towards the Verona center forward with clear provocative intent: however, the full-back’s scream was not followed by any disciplinary action from whistleblower Fabbri.
