That’s why Bayern sports director Christoph Freund didn’t speak on TV

FC Bayern is finally in a serious crisis. The German record champions embarrassed themselves at VfL Bochum – and things got wild after the game.

Immediately after FC Bayern’s 2-3 defeat at VfL Bochum on Sunday evening, there was also a stir surrounding Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund. “DAZN” presenter Laura Wontorra said at the end of the streaming provider’s broadcast that the Bayern boss had canceled a requested interview. They would have liked to speak to someone responsible, but that was not possible, said Wontorra.

The impression arose that Freund perhaps did not want to comment on the future of head coach Thomas Tuchel and therefore canceled the interview. However, according to t-online information, this is not the case. In fact, “DAZN” had asked Freund through Bayern’s press spokesman Dieter Nickles for a so-called “superflash” interview, which will be carried out immediately after the end of the game. Freund himself didn’t know anything about the request and couldn’t even take notice of it because, without exception, all the players and those responsible went directly to the Bayern dressing room after the defeat.

Dreesen: Tuchel will “of course” remain coach

Requests for normal interviews were then made to Leon Goretzka, Manuel Neuer and Tuchel, all of whom also commented on “DAZN”. In the mixed zone, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, among others, spoke about Tuchel’s situation and made it clear that the head coach would “of course” continue to sit on the Bayern bench in the home game against RB Leipzig on Saturday. According to t-online information, Freund would also have been prepared to make a statement. However, due to the ban on night flights, the people of Munich were in a hurry and had to be at the airport in Düsseldorf at 10:15 p.m. Therefore, Tuchel had to cancel his participation in the press conference.

After the embarrassment, Tuchel still answered the questions. “Anything that could go wrong went wrong today. A lot went against us. We had a lot of top-class chances. That wasn’t deserved,” said Tuchel.

After the disappointments in Leverkusen and Rome, the situation with the record champions is becoming increasingly precarious. Bayer Leverkusen is now eight points ahead at the top of the Bundesliga table, and the defending champions are no longer in control of their twelfth championship in a row. This is “just not that realistic,” said Tuchel. There is even a risk of the first titleless season in twelve years.
