The German workwear specialist Strauss has created a new chair for sustainability and textile innovation in Bangladesh.
From June, 60 students at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (Aust) in Dhaka can take the Bachelor’s degree “Textile Engineering – Sustainability and Textile Innovation” in Dhaka, Strauss said on Thursday. Students learn and research social responsibility, environmental protection and technical innovation in the textile sector in the areas.
The study modules have been developed and teachers have been recruited since 2020. Even before the official start in the summer, 500 Aust students had the opportunity to occupy and complete individual modules.
The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources at United Nations University, the Technical University of Dresden and the Aust have supported Strauss in the project.
Strauss is committed to education and development
The company has been committed to education and development at the production sites for years, where Strauss is technically working with many years of production partners, according to the message. Last year the Don Bosco Strauss School was opened in northern Bangladesh, which includes a kindergarten, a primary and middle school and a high school for a total of 1,000 children.
“As a company – but also as a family – we have had a strong bond with the country for 19 years. We believe that we can make a difference with our actions on site,” said CEO Steffen Strauss. “We are convinced that the most sustainable type of social and ecological engagement can be done in the field of education. Because nothing looks more sustainable than education. Land and people benefit from this over generations.”
