Sinner and Sonego ko in doubles at Indian Wells, Bolelli-Vavassori ok

Jannik and Lorenzo are defeated by the specialists Granollers and Zeballos: 7-6 6-3. The other blue pair is in the quarterfinals

Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego’s adventure in the Indian Wells doubles draw ends in the round of 16. The heroes of Malaga succumbed to a pair of specialists, composed of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos: 7-6 6-3 the final score. A good performance by the blue duo, the merit of the number 5 seeded couple is above all that of having played a great tie break in the first set, and then taking advantage of Sinner’s only missed pass on serve in the second set: so it ends here Sonego’s adventure in Indian Wells after the first round singles defeat against Cameron Norrie, while Jannik will return to the court tomorrow to challenge Ben Shelton in the round of 16.

THE MATCH

Sonego and Sinner approach the match as always: with a smile, having fun. The goal is to add experiences together in view of the Paris Olympics, while on the other side there are two seasoned doubles players: Granollers and Zeballos were in Turin in November and this year they lost the final of the Buenos Aires tournament against Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli. The match is balanced: Sinner gives the fans a couple of spectacular points, he lets go of his arm. On the other hand, Granollers and Zeballos do practically nothing wrong from a tactical point of view. The tie break that decides the first set is a monologue from the Spaniard and the Argentine: 7-0, simply perfect. While the second set was decided by the only break of the match, in the sixth game on Sinner’s serve: a couple of forehands missed by Jannik, errors induced by the solidity of the opponents. By winning this match, interesting scenarios would have opened up for the Italian pair: the number 1 seeded pair (Bopanna/Ebden) exited the tournament and therefore the top part of the draw was freed up. Good news however for Vavassori and Bolelli, who advance to the quarter-finals without playing due to Jamie Murray’s retirement: Andrea and Simone can dream big.
