Scudetto playoff: what happens in case of arrival on equal points between Inter and Naples?

Five days after the end of the championship, Inter and Napoli appeared at the top of the ranking, at 71 points. Therefore, the chances of the Scudetto will grow to decide on the playoff. Yes, because from 2022-23 the dry challenge was introduced to assign the title of Campione d’Italia, in the event of a score between two teams. An outcome that had a single precedent, in the distant era: June 7, 1964, Bologna beats Inter 2-0 and wins the title. Since the playoff was reintroduced, the hypothesis has never materialized. It could happen this year. How, where and when?

The single race will develop over the regulatory 90 minutes, without additional times: in the event of a draw, there will be penalty kicks. In 2023, on the proposal of the Serie A League, the FIGC approved a derogation from the Noifs by establishing that the play-off-Scudetto will play “in the home of the best classified company according to the criteria of the Standing ranking or at the headquarters of the Italian Cup final in the event that prohibitions of the authorities responsible for public order exist”. Since the direct clashes in the championship between Inter and Naples have closed in perfect balance (1-1 and 1-1), for the game headquarters it would take into account the following criteria: networks difference in the entire championship (today Inter +40, Naples +27), then greater number of networks (today Inter 72, Naples 52), then draw. The League, however, will also take into account the seat of the security measures possibly adopted by the competent bodies. In case of prohibitions, it would be played in the neutral field, then at the Olimpico in Rome.

And the date? It has not yet been decided, also because there are at the moment several variables. What appears is that the temporal location of the playoff would fall in the last week of May. This is because the championship, with the last day, ends on May 25, while from 2 to 10 June there will be the FIFA window for the national teams, with a mandatory release of the players scheduled for June 1. The variable is represented by the Champions League final, scheduled for May 31: Inter are in the semifinal and hopes to get there.
