In 2026, the fashion industry will be floating on clouds. At least that’s what the Pantone color institute predicted on Thursday, which crowned “Cloud Dancer” the color of the coming year.
It is a bright, slightly floating white that, in its simplicity, conveys calm, clarity and space for new ideas. In a time full of change and sensory overload, the sound seems like a conscious pause. With Cloud Dancer, Pantone is replacing the warming, brown color Mocha Mousse, which reflected the desire for comfort in 2024.
Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, describes Cloud Dancer as a “blank canvas” – a hue that sheds the old and makes room for fresh concepts. “An airy white that opens up space for creativity, allowing the imagination to flow freely and giving rise to new insights and bold ideas,” explains Pressman.

The subtle white tone deliberately focuses on reduction and creates space for focus and inner peace. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, emphasizes: “In times of change, Cloud Dancer helps to maintain focus. It is a conscious statement of simplification that creates freedom from external distractions and thus enables clarity.”
Visually, Cloud Dancer has an impact on several levels. The color with the code “Pantone 11‑4201” is a central component in the color spectrum. It offers structure, lets other colors shine and enables harmonious combinations or targeted contrasts. In a world where color is increasingly an expression of personal identity, Cloud Dancer adapts, creates lightness and works both on its own and in combination with other tones.

A trend color with surprise potential?
While the need for peace and a respite from sensory overload is a welcome change for many, Cloud Dancer’s brightness might come as a surprise to some. Before the official announcement, visitors to the Pantone Color Institute website had the opportunity to make their prediction for the color of the year. The majority – around 32 percent – chose green, a color the institute described as the tone of “deep forests and vast meadows.”
Not only does nature seem to be on some people’s minds, but it has also been a key factor in many of the trends predicted for the coming year. As early as 2023, the trend institute WGSN and the color experts at Color predicted that “Transformative Teal” would play a central role in 2026. The blue-green color symbolizes ecological responsibility, calm and transformation and reflects the diversity of nature.
However, the influence of nature goes far beyond the choice of color. Trend forecasters from WGSN, Première Vision and Future Snoops, as well as experts such as Lidewij Edelkoort and Jan Agelink, expect a shift towards materials and silhouettes inspired by the natural world in 2026. Bio-based materials made from algae, fungi or cellulose are becoming increasingly important alongside classic wool fibers such as alpaca and mohair. These materials fulfill the desire for sustainable and regenerative clothing that offers protection, comfort and a sensory connection to nature.
Since 2000, Pantone has published the Color of the Year annually, based on extensive trend research as well as social, economic, political and cultural influences. Previous colors include Mocha Mousse (2025), Peach Fuzz (2024), Viva Magenta (2023), Very Peri (2022), Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (2021), and Classic Blue (2020).
