One last time Mats Hummels can still appear for BVB in the friendly against Juventus Turin. Now he has revealed how he is planning his life after football.
After his career as a footballer, Mats Hummels does not want to take on new jobs for a long time. “I will not do anything except for my expert job on TV. And nothing over years,” he said in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper. “You should never rule out anything, but the clear plan is that I really do not take on any other task over a long period of time,” said the central defender.
Hummels also explained his motives: “The main thing for me is not to be constantly present.” For years he had to explain things as a football professional. So it should be over now. “Now I can just choose when and where I appear,” said Hummels.
Hummels will definitely appear on Saturday at the BVB test game against Juventus Turin – on the pitch. Because the test is also its farewell game. After his last year of professional at AS Rome, Hummels can wear the yellow-black jersey again. He admits that his farewell to BVB was not entirely voluntary in the summer of 2024. “Yes, I would have liked to stay with BVB in any case,” said Hummels.
This had failed primarily because of his poor relationship with the then BVB coach Edin Terzić, who also went a short time later. Hummels expresses it as follows: “The constellation just didn’t fit one hundred percent.” But that is also “okay” and there is no evil blood. “There is no resentment for me at all. Such sporting decisions have to be accepted.”
In the past few months there had even been rumors that Hummels could again play for Dortmund at the club World Cup, which ultimately did not come about. “It was a little spinning, which only ruled between Aki Watzke and me,” said Hummels. Then, however, the topic was publicly broken. “After all, frankly, it never came to the specific question of whether I want to do that,” reveals the central defender. However, he himself would have been ready: “The idea of playing my last competitive game in the BVB jersey definitely irritated me.”
