The toy group Mattel promises prospects in the United States because of the import duties of President Donald Trump.

The barbie manufacturer announced that they will adapt the prices in the US market in the places where it is “necessary”. Mattel did not provide any information on which toys could be more expensive. At the same time, company boss Ynon Kreiz said that the price for 40 to 50 percent of the product offer would not exceed $ 20.

Trump: Children do not need 30 dolls

Critics of Trump’s import tariffs warn that they can lead to price increases in consumer goods – and empty shelves because companies could do without deliveries instead of paying the high tariffs. Trump rejects this. At the same time, he defended the tariffs with the argument that the United States imported too much “scrap” from China that was not needed.

At a cabinet session, he said in particular that girls were enough instead of 30 dolls, who “maybe cost a few more dollars”. In interviews at the weekend, he then climbed three to five dolls to the children, but also said: “You don’t need 250 pencils. You can have five.”

Mattel relocates production from China

Trump has China, where the toy industry produces a lot, especially in its sights. The tariffs on goods manufactured there are now 145 percent. Trump issues two goals for his politics: bringing more production to the USA and compensating for the trade deficit in shops with China.

Mattel now wants to accelerate production from China to other countries. The manufacture of 500 products should be laid this year, and there were already 280 in the past year, said Kreiz. One is in a better position than competitors: 40 percent of global production from China would come with Mattel, and the proportion in the industry is 80 percent.

Customs do tariffs in Mattel in the third quarter

Mattel is currently delivering around one fifth of his global production to the USA. This proportion should decrease below 15 percent in the coming year and under 10 percent in 2027. But you also work on reducing faster if necessary, said Kreiz. He assumes that Mattel, given the long logistics chain, will only feel the effect of the tariffs in the third quarter – more closely to the important Christmas business. In view of the unclear situation, Mattel no longer makes a forecast for the current year.

In the past quarter, Mattel increased sales by two percent to $ 826.6 million in the past quarter. The bottom line was that there was a loss of $ 40.3 million after red numbers of $ 28.3 million a year earlier.
