Mats Hummels talks about the end of his career

BVB professional Mats Hummels does not currently see his performance ready for the World Cup and understands his elimination in the DFB team. He still has ambitions at the club.

Mats Hummels has not yet written off his participation in the World Cup in Qatar, but has expressed understanding for the loss of his place in the national team. “To do that, I clearly have to play better than last season. I’m very realistic about that. If I don’t manage to raise myself to the level, I can’t be an issue in the national team,” said the 33-year-old Borussia defender Dortmund on Thursday in an interview with “Ruhr Nachrichten”. He described his contact with national coach Hansi Flick as “relatively close”.

Hummels: “I’m a huge fan of competition”

The veteran is hoping for a positive effect from the competition in Dortmund, which has intensified with the signing of the two national defenders Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck this summer.

“I’m a huge fan of competition. I think very often the people who are too sure of their place don’t manage to tease the last percentage out of themselves. And that’s why I always find competition to be something very invigorating.”

Hummels expressed understanding that the club only wants to talk about the extension of his contract, which expires next year, in the spring: “I just said to Sebastian Kehl that I would not be extending it with myself instead of BVB. I think so , the level of relaxation that both sides are showing is just right. I want to feel like I can still help and not just be ballast.”
