Following the end of the Canadian Premier League season, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 184 players. David Rodríguez, match winner of the playoff final between Atlético Ottawa and Cavalry FC (2:1 n.V.), is now the most valuable professional in Canadian football’s upper house. The two German legionnaires Tobias Warschewski (200,000 euros) and Nicolas Wahling (150,000 euros) from Cavalry remain unchanged.
Rodríguez, who is on loan from sister club Atlético de San Luis, had a strong season in Canada. The 23-year-old playmaker, who has both a US and a Mexican passport, scored 14 goals and ten assists in 34 competitive games – and was also by far the best player in the CPL. As a result, there is great interest in him. Its market value climbs from 200,000 to 275,000 euros.
With his new estimate, Rodríguez overtakes his teammate Ballou Tabla. Although Tabla had a decent season with Ottawa, registering 13 goals and four assists in 34 games, it is likely that the market for the 26-year-old winger is somewhat limited at the moment after failed attempts in Europe. At 250,000 euros (-25,000) he remains one of the most valuable players in the league. This also applies to teammate Manny Aparicio, who at the age of 30 has now dropped from 250,000 to 200,000 euros due to his age.
Canadian market values: Talents around Kozlovskiy & Jimoh are rising
Aside from Tabla and Aparicio, the update for the Canadian Premier League champions is very positive. Central defender Noah Abatneh, who is said to have aroused interest in Major League Soccer, and top striker Samuel Salter can increase their market values by 75,000 and 50,000 euros respectively to 250,000 euros. Salter is moving to Sweden in the winter, where he will join his former Ottawa colleague Matteo de Brienne at GAIS. Other players with increased value in Ottawa include 19-year-old Joaquim Coulanges and 17-year-old Sergey Kozlovskiy. For both it goes from 50,000 euros up to 150,000 euros.
Outside of Ottawa, several youngsters in the league are also seeing significant growth. At Vancouver FC, the market value of 21-year-old striker Ndiaye Pathé climbs by 1,150 percent from 10,000 to 125,000 euros, at HFX Wanderers the valuation of Canadian junior national striker Tiago Coimbra jumps from 125,000 to 200,000 euros and at York United it goes up for 17-year-old prodigy Shola Jimoh 100,000 to 175,000 euros.
“Jimoh is one of the biggest talents in Canadian football. Although he is only 17, he has now played his second season in the Canadian Premier League. Not surprisingly, he was also a key player for the Canadian U17 at the World Cup in Qatar. Jimoh is fast and tricky. Currently he plays mostly on the wing, but can also be used as a 10 and forward. It is only a matter of time before he moves to a better league,” says Manuel Veth, Area Manager US & North America at Transfermarkt.
This is how transfer market market values work
The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
