MANCHESTER (dpa-AFX) – Thanks to a late hat trick from Amad Traore in the final stages, Manchester United avoided an embarrassing home defeat against the bottom of the Premier League table. The English football record champions won the catch-up game on matchday 21 at Old Trafford thanks to the striker from Ivory Coast’s goals against newly promoted and relegated FC Southampton 3-1 (0-1). Traore scored in the 82nd and 90th minutes and in stoppage time (90th + 4).
Previously, coach Ruben Amorim’s team had spent a long time chasing in vain the deficit caused by an own goal from Manuel Ugarte (43′). Thanks to the success, Manchester improved to twelfth place and is now ten points ahead of the first relegation zone.
Brighton & Hove Albion and German coach Fabian Hürzeler had previously celebrated an easy 2-0 (0-0) win over relegation candidates Ipswich Town. The goals for the team of the former St. Pauli coach were scored by Kaoru Mitoma (59th) and former Hoffenheim professional Georginio Rutter (59th). Brighton improved to ninth place in the table./mkl/DP/zb
