There was a break in Basel early in the season. Head coach Kim Kulig and the club go separate paths.
After the second matchday in the Women’s Super League, the FC Basel women’s team ended the collaboration with head coach Kim Kulig. The decision was made as a result of “different views in relation to the overall vision and the sporty unsatisfactory team development”, as the club announced on Tuesday.
According to the club, the defeat from the weekend at FC Rapperswil-Jona played no role in the decision. The game ended 0-2 – it was the second competitive game of the new season.
Until further notice, Kulig’s previous assistant Laura Vetterlein takes over sporting responsibility on the sidelines. Kulig had started the head coaching post in the summer of 2023. For the former international and European champion in 2009, it was the first commitment as the main person responsible for a club. Previously, she had worked as an assistant coach at VfL Wolfsburg.
Despite the early farewell, the Kulig Club recognized work. Fabian Sanginés, head of women’s football at FC Basel, said: “The current development should not hide what Kim has done for FCB in the past two years.” The hoped-for sporty title failed to materialize, but Kulig managed to “shape a top team with a lot of effort and great dedication and to get a great team culture.”
