Killed cyclist (29) was fleeing from the police

The 29-year-old cyclist who died last Tuesday after a collision on the Backer and Ruebweg in Breda was fleeing from the police at the time. The Breda resident tried to quickly cross the road, but was then hit by a car.

The police confirm this BN DeStem. The man is said to have been hanging around at the Shell gas station that morning. Because he looked quite confused, the staff asked him to leave. When he refused, the police were called.

When officers wanted to speak to him, the man decided to run off on his bicycle. He tried to cross the busy Backer en Ruebweg, where things immediately went wrong. A police spokesperson told the newspaper that they had tried to stop the man. “But it was already too late. He was hit before the eyes of the officers.”

The man was then resuscitated for a while, but to no avail. After the fatal accident, the police initially reported that the man had been on foot. It was only later that Tuesday morning that it became clear that it was a cyclist.
