Japan is eliminated from the Asian Cup: late quarter-final knockout against Iran

Japan’s footballers were surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup. The co-favorites lost 1-2 (1-0) against Iran on Saturday in Ar-Rayyan due to a foul penalty in stoppage time.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ko Itakura fouled Hossein Kanaani (Persepolis), and Alireza Jahanbakhsh (96th minute | Feyenoord) scored the winning goal for Iran from the penalty kick. Hidemasa Morita (28th | Sporting) put Japan in the lead, Mohammad Mohebi (55th | Rostov) equalized.

Update 7:49 p.m.: The Iranians will now face defending champions Qatar in the semi-finals on Wednesday. The hosts of the Asian Cup and the 2022 World Cup beat Uzbekistan 3-2 on penalties. Pedro Miguel scored the decisive goal from the spot after Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham had previously saved three penalties. After regular time and extra time, the score was 1-1 thanks to an own goal by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov (27th) and the equalizer by Odildzhon Khamrobekov (59th).
