The inner city of Purmerend is again a bit nicer, says Tineke Abercrombie Schoorl. On the request of the Historisch Purmerend Association, of which she is chairman, a replica of a historic water pump was placed on the cheese market last month.

In the nineteenth century, people in the Netherlands died of Cholera. That is why water pumps were installed all over the country. Also in Purmerend: from these pumps one could tap relatively healthier (ground) water for daily water needs.

There used to be five here: on Herengracht, the Ooievaarsplein, the cheese market and two on the Koemarkt. A replica that is now in its old place was made of the most beautiful of the five – which on the cheese market – has been made.

Slightly turned

A model of the old town hall can be seen in the Purmerends Museum. The pump is in return. It can be seen that he used to be slightly different. The current model is now right, that was more practical.

Tineke is proud. “I think it’s great that he finally got there.” In the end, because the plans were already there eight years ago. “Of course there are more things involved than you think in advance. There have been discussions at the municipality about the pipes, ownership, maintenance. You don’t think about that in advance.” Corona also took longer than planned. “But it was worth it.”

The pump will be officially unveiled on Friday 9 May. After that he will also do it, is the promise.
