Fabian Wiede von Die Füchsen Berlin played his last international match for the German national handball team at the EM 2022. Since then, national coach Alfred Gislason has been without the player’s lack of understanding.
“My body keeps, I feel superfit, I am very satisfied,” said Fabian Wiede in an interview with the “Sport Bild” and added: “Maybe I have my best level. Well, I had a harder throw in front of my shoulder surgery five, six years ago, but I have developed again in a playful way.”
Nevertheless, Wiede no longer received an invitation to the national team. “I don’t know what the national coach has against me. I thought that after the clarifying conversation, all problems were eliminated. But after that I never heard from him again. Unfortunately, there is radio silence between us,” the 31-year-old noted.
With national coach Alfred Gislason, Wiede fell out of favor because he often had to cancel courses and tournaments. At the beginning of 2023 there is said to have been a clarifying conversation between the two. Nevertheless, the Icelander has been refraining from the Foxes star since then.
With a view to his injury-related cancellation (among other things at the 2024 Olympic Games)), Wiede said: “Of course you don’t like to do that. I always like to play for Germany, but I only thought it was fair, because I was not fit and still had pain in the foot. An Olympic tournament in my condition was impossible for me.”
Wiede open for return to the national team
For a comeback in the DHB team, however, it would continue to be open. After all, he never ended his career in the national dress, as the back room player emphasized.
“I always like to run in the Germany jersey and will always give everything,” said Wiede, but made it clear: I am ready, but I don’t know whether it will work again under the coach. “
