With a convincing appearance against the Danish champion Aalborg, the Füchse Berlin secured a clear victory in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League. It didn’t look like it at the beginning of the game.
The Foxes Berlin have won a good starting position for reaching the Final Four in the Champions League. On Thursday evening, the Berlin handball players won their quarter-final first leg against the Danish champion Aalborg with 37:29 (14:15). The team of coach Jaron Siewert increased after an error -related initial phase. The second leg will take place next week Wednesday (6:45 p.m.) in Aalborg.
Foxes overcome resistance
The guests from Denmark were able to convince from the start and also rely on their goalkeeper, the triple world champion Niklas Landin. The foxes, on the other hand, made too many misses and technical errors in the initial phase, so that after 20 minutes they were already 7:13. After a break of Foxes coach Jaron Siewert and a subsequent 5: 1 run, the Berliners came back and went into the break with a narrow 14:15 deficit.
After the change of sides, the foxes made their good performance – and even further increased. Hákun West Av Detigum first gave the Berliners in the lead with 18:17 after 35 minutes. And the Berliners no longer gave them out. With several kept seven meters and outstanding moves, they continued to expand their lead and thus secured the surprisingly high victory in the first leg.
Foxes want titles
“This is very special, the second half was just crazy,” said left winger Tim Freihöfer, who had shone next to Gidsel with nine goals. For the second leg next Wednesday, he announced not to let up: “We do not go to Aalborg to get behind, but to win.”
The “dream of reaching for titles”, as Gidsel had formulated before the game, continues to live. The foxes go to Denmark with the comfortable lead in the back. “This is a huge opportunity for us. We play against Aalborg for the final Four – and after that I take care of the championship,” said Gidsel before the game.
