The wheelchair tennis player Gerard collapsed in the athletes’ village in Tokyo – two German doctors were the first on site. “Maybe you saved his life,” says a spokesman for the Belgian federation.

Two German doctors revived Belgian wheelchair tennis player Joachim Gerard after a circulatory collapse at the Paralympics in Tokyo. “They were the first to be with him and helped him regain consciousness,” said a spokesman for the Belgian association of the German Press Agency on Saturday. “We are very, very grateful to them. Maybe they saved his life.”

The former world number one collapsed on Wednesday evening in the athletes’ village in Tokyo and was taken to the emergency room. “He’s fine,” said the spokesman on Saturday. “But he will have to stay in the hospital for a few more days.” There is no precise diagnosis yet. However, it was also decided not to make details public.

The German delegation is accommodated in the athletes’ village in the same building as the Belgian. Friedhelm Julius Beucher, President of the German Disabled Sports Association, told the dpa: “Anja Hirschmüller and Stefan Sevenich may have saved a human life. That’s worth more than any medal. I’ll drive to the village tonight, Anja will bring the Belgian champagne and she hug despite Corona.”
