Half of crimes remain unsolved: ‘These are distressing cases’
More and more victims of crime are finding that reporting the crime yields little benefit. Cases are left unturned, the Public Prosecution Service dismisses cases more quickly and without an Article 12 procedure or media attention, nothing often happens. “These are very distressing cases,” says journalist Martijn Haas. “People have to wait three or four years until one case comes along.” Lawyer Richard Korver also sees that the pressure on the Public Prosecution Service is very great. ‘The police force is aging and emptying out. The Public Prosecution Service is also overloaded.’ According to Korver, the situation is very serious. The Public Prosecution Service has also responded: ‘There are always more criminal offenses than can be arrested. That is why the police and the Public Prosecution Service must set priorities. No matter how hard everyone works, there remains more crime than can be solved, prosecuted and tried.’
