“It is extremely special that Mexx and I are both so loved by the fans that we are now coming to the stadium,” Meerdink continues. “That also makes me very proud as a dad. I try to support Mexx in a calm way and give tips. I also did that during his rehabilitation, but he was already very mature in that.”
Return after almost five months
Meerdink junior made his return to AZ last Saturday after almost five months of absence due to injuries. “After a week he has already turned the switch and has gone for it. He certainly accepts my tips when we discuss opportunities or runs after a match. I also do that with my other son, Melle. It is also important that they find their own way.”
The Meerdink family was present in Rotterdam when Mexx was back on the field. “It was nice that he was allowed to get back into the line and had his value in the last block. They turned the game around (late 1-2 win, ed.) and it was nice to see that he was so happy. As a family, it is nice that he has returned after such a long period and quite a serious injury.”
