Extremely terrible and horrible news for both Carlo Boszhard and his employer RTL: there is a threat of a mental relapse that could disrupt all his television plans. “It could well be.”
Carlo Boszhard has been playing the musical star in the Beatrix Theater in Utrecht for quite some time now and that is of course very difficult for TV stars. They are used to a thirty-minute working day and then such a big musical is a different story. The good news for Carlo is that his musical Moulin Rouge is almost over. And then?
Mentally sharp
It was an incredibly difficult time, says Carlo in the Party. “I think people sometimes underestimate that. They may think that I just put on a heavy voice, but there is a lot of technique behind it. If I were to do that eight times a week purely on strength, I would have lost my voice within a week.”
He continues: “You really have to work with breathing support and technique to maintain that. Especially if you sometimes play two shows in one day. And at the same time you have to remain 100 percent mentally sharp during such a performance.”
Father passed away
Carlo states that the musical helped him at the time of his father’s death. “Yes, maybe. Look, life goes on as usual in the meantime. My father deteriorated and we had to say goodbye to a cat that we lived with for fourteen years. And then our other cat also died.”
He continues: “That all happens in the middle of a season when you are on stage eight times a week. And yet you continue to perform, that is also part of this profession. At the same time, such a performance also helps in a way, because you have to fully concentrate during those three hours. You have almost no room to wander into sadness or worries.”
Big blow
Now, just before the new TV season, the mental blow is still in danger. “That could well be the case. Of course, you hear that more often from people: that at first you just carry on and function and that sadness only sets in when everything comes to a standstill. I don’t know whether it works that way for me.”
“Maybe I will suddenly get a huge blow when everything disappears after the last performance of Moulin Rouge on August 2. I’ll just have to wait and see. In any case, I now notice that I really long for peace in my head. Not even for a big trip or spectacular plans, but just for an overview.”
