There are also Virtus Bologna and Nelson’s new Roma, which in the meantime will compete in the Eurocup, among the 17 interested in expanding the competition, which will rise to 24 teams in a year, all with permanent licences. And the entry of the new ones will generate 400 million which will be divided between the founding clubs
The transformation of the 13 Euroleague clubs into franchises with a permanent license will begin on 1 July shareholderstherefore with a currently ten-year license, including Olimpia Milano, the league’s first move awaiting any developments in the dialogues with the NBA for a single competition. From 1 July a data center will be made available to these clubs to share the economic plan. If Real Madrid had not yet signed the ten-year renewal at that time, after having declared their will but not yet signed the agreement, in addition to not being able to access the data center they will also lose the opportunity to move to franchise status at no cost. To which those who, like the other 12 companies, including Milan, have already signed are entitled.

This step will then be followed by an expansion to other teams: 17 have applied to become franchises, including Nelson’s new Roma (with London and Berlin) among the major European capitals to which to expand the competition, and in the meantime it will participate in the Eurocup, but also 14 existing clubs including Virtus Bologna, which is entering the second year of its three-year license. Again according to what appears, and which is expected to be announced to the Board on June 26th, this first phase of the expansion project will bring the Euroleague to 24 teams in 2027-28, of which two will be promoted directly from the Eurocup. And therefore, considering entry fees between 50 and 90 million depending on the size of the market and the historicity of the club, it will generate resources estimated at around 400 million, which in turn will bring an income of more than 30 million for each of the 13 shareholder clubs, including Olimpia.

For teams that will be left out of the first phase of expansion, a possible further expansion to 30 teams for 2028-29 or the following season is being studied. The clubs participating in the expansion will have the same rights and obligations as the founding clubs, only they will not participate in the redistribution of the entry fees of the new teams. This development comes in the wake of the desire for expansion immediately declared by the new Euroleague CEO Chus Bueno to the Gazzetta to raise the economic value of the league and the individual clubs, for a total of 3.2 billion euros immediately, rising to 4.3 in 2026-27 according to an estimate by JB Capital.
