In his active time at Bayern, Christian Lell took care of one or the other scandal, and alcohol and drugs also played a role. Now the ex-professional speaks in a remarkably open interview about the failure at that time.
“It was a very unconscious behavior in a fear. I tried to look for the hold outside,” said Lell in the program “Bild Sport” on “Welt TV”. “This has been messed up and in the depression that led me into a very lifelong phase.”
According to the 41-year-old, the reasons for this are in his difficult childhood. “I grew up with violence, alcohol and abuse in a very conflict -up family,” said Lell. “For me, football was the safe harbor and escaping from an environment that was very conflicting.”
Today Lell, who came from the youth of FC Bayern and also kicked there for many years in the professional team, better than then.
“From this borderline experience, I found fear of love, reflection and acceptance and thus developed back into a new life,” said the former German junior international. “I was looking for professional help, worked on me. That was the start -up aid.”
“Any scandal” prevented Christian Lells DFB nomination
Lell said “with today’s knowledge and awareness” he perceived the time “as part of this trip”. He knew “that there was another part. I am grateful today that I was able to make this borderline experience to have found the step to me”.
Bitter: His lifestyle even brought the full-back to the DFB’s international team.
“Uli Hoeneß said to me that national coach Jürgen Klinsmann would have called him and would invite me to the DFB squad. But then I took care of some scandal and the call was missing,” said Lell.
