The blue outside, who never won a trophy, before the Bilbao final with Manchester United: “In the premier we paid for the injuries, I first, but in the cup we were more united”
“It could be my first trophy: it would mean a lot”. Destiny Udogie, like all Tottenham, has the Europa League in her head. Winning in Bilbao the final with Manchester United would not only mean the first trophy of his career: it would also be the first for the club since 2008, the one that in addition to stopping fasting would take away from the Spurs the fame of successful losers, as well as making the worst season in the premier in the history of the club with a European cup and the pass for the next Champions League less heavy. The blue knows well that, as for his team, this was not the best season for him. But he also knows that Bilbao is the last opportunity to straighten it.
Udogie, what would you mean for Tottenham to win this Europa League?
“It would be something really important, considering also the difficult season we have had. It would be great.”
In Europe you are in the final, in the premier the first of the not relegated: why all this difference?
“It was a hard season for the many injuries that we had: they are an important part of what happened to us. In Europe, however, the team managed to remain united and always make at the highest level”.
And now you can make the history of the club.
“Yes, it’s something we think. We all want to win: for some time this club has not raised a trophy, it has become our goal for this year”.
And what season was it for you?
“Difficult, for all the injuries I have had and the constant attempt to return to the maximum of the form. But I’m trying to finish the season at the best, to help the team”.
How does this final come?
“I’m fine now. At the beginning of the season I came from an operation and without a pre -season done well it was difficult. But now thanks to the team and the staff I am finding the best condition”.
The fact of facing Manchester United, another English team?
“No, in my opinion it is still a good thing. Both we made a great journey in Europe: we would deserve to win both”.
You don’t only play the cup, but also the pass for the next Champions League: does it add pressure?
“Winning this cup can change everything, the pass in the Champions League is something very important: it means playing in Europe also next year, which is a great thing”.
How was it in Europe this year?
“Magnificent, it was my first time.”
What makes it different from the premier?
“Playing against teams from other countries, from Italy to Germany to Spain, has its charm”.
When did you understand that you could win the cup?
“We have always believed that we can win, but moving to Frankfurt in the quarterfinals pushed us even more, made us say that we could really win this competition”.
Should it succeed has a special gift in mind?
“No, but if I win someone he has to do it to me.”
“Some close friends …”.
