The German ski jumpers recently stuck deep in the crisis. At the World Cup, however, Andreas Wellinger managed the liberation. The national coach is also relieved.

Ski jumper Andreas Wellinger hopes for further surprises in the second World Cup week after his silver coup. His second place and the fourth place by Karl Geiger are “a liberation for the entire team,” said the 32-year-old in Trondheim: “And I am sure that we can fly far on the big ski jump.”

He could “probably only rate the importance of his sixth World Cup medal in a few weeks,” said the two-time Olympic champion. However, it is certain: “We recently had two extremely hard months. So that’s a very, very nice silver medal.”

The DSV eagles had recently missed the top 10 regularly after a strong start of the season, and a podium was not enough in 2025. “When we were kicked with feet, I said: don’t write us off,” said Geiger: “You should never do that, because we are of good quality in the team.”

Geiger expressly stood behind national coach Stefan Horngacher, which had recently been clear. “It is incredibly important for the team when the hard work is rewarded. I also have to protect the coaches. They do very, very good work,” said the Oberstdorfer.

Horngacher himself was also visibly relieved. “An extreme stone has fallen down,” said the Austrian. “We have tried so much recently and tried not to let us get out. That it works out is of course top class. Ski jumping goes up quickly and quickly – thank God.

For Wellinger, Geiger and Co. there is now a change to the large hill, there is three competitions in the mixed (Wednesday), team (Thursday) and individual (Saturday). “We can now appear with a broad cross. We have a medal that nobody can take away from us. And there are three to get three on the big one,” said Geiger.
