The German women’s national soccer team didn’t reward itself for a strong performance in the first leg of the Nations League final: Germany largely had world champions Spain under control, but couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw.

And instead of laying the foundation for the first triumph in the national tournament with one goal or two in Kaiserslautern, everything is now still open. On Tuesday (6.30 p.m./live on the first) the team of national coach Christian Wück has to survive in the second leg in Madrid.

Wück: “We just have to reward ourselves”

This annoys him immensely, the 52-year-old explained on the Sportschau microphone: “We just have to reward ourselves. I think that’s just the next step. That we become calmer and more precise in front of the goal.” It’s not a matter of technology, all players have it. But: “You have to make the right decision.”

So there can’t be any talk of a successful revenge (yet). At the European Championships in Switzerland last summer, Spain had the German team in the semi-finals with a 1-0 after extra time thrown out of the tournament. However, how strong the DFB team has now presented itself gives hope. Even if the second leg now looks like a real final after this 0-0 draw.

Germany dominates the world champion, …

This time the Germans had adapted very well to the Spaniards’ possession style of football. The DFB women stood deep and switched quickly after winning the ball. Klara Bühl achieved her first goal in the second minute. A little later, Nicole Anyomi couldn’t really decide between a shot and a pass, the ball rolled just past the far post (6th).

The initial phase had an impact. Wück’s team gained self-confidence and quickly got the fans on the sold-out Betzenberg (40,159 spectators) behind them. And also with the Spaniards, who seemed unusually shy and hardly managed anything forward.

…but just doesn’t hit the goal

On the other hand, the German offensive regularly played the world champions dizzy. But goalkeeper Cata Coll was strong against Bühl (19th), Franziska Kett (27th) and Bühl again (29th).

Spain’s goalkeeper was once beaten, but defense chief Irene Paredes cleared Jule Brand’s shot in front of the line (28th). And once again the post saved Spain after a header from Rebecca Knaak (33′).

Germany only wins after aluminum hits

After the change, that almost took revenge early on. Alexia Putellas shot just wide (49′), Ester hit the outside post (54′). But anyone who expected the usual Spanish game was disappointed. Because the DFB selection worked their way back into the game.

But they still had no luck in the end. After one of her typical solos down the left side, Bühl moved inside and then shot off. Cata Coll wouldn’t have been able to get there, but the ball hit the aluminum again (71′). A little later, the ball slipped over Brand’s foot during a cross and the ball landed on top of the crossbar (75th). The world champions faltered, but Germany didn’t bring them down.

The DFB women warm up during training

Germany initially has home advantage in the final first leg of the Nations League today; the decision will be made on Tuesday in Madrid. Will we be able to get revenge for the lost European Championship semi-final?
