Can Castricumse Rugby Club revive the glory days?

From 2003 to 2007, Castricum’s rugby players were invincible and became national champions five times in a row. No championship has been celebrated since then. Can the old times be revived in the North Holland village?

“We can become national champions and if we get into the top four, anything can happen,” says captain Toby Twigg confidently. Castricum qualified for the championship pool and won the first match against Hoek van Holland (19-5).

Experience

After the last championship in 2007, things went less well for Castricum. “We have dropped off a bit. We missed some follow-up from the old boys. The sport is largely experience and that makes it difficult. You have to know how to finish matches or how to kill them at certain moments. As a young player you know that often not yet,” said Maik Schermer of the Castricum technical committee.

Welshman in his place in Castricum

Due to the departure of captain Dirk Wieringa to Australia, Toby Twigg has been appointed as captain. The born Welshman has lived in the Netherlands for more than three years and loves it. “A really nice country, with nice people. I live and work here and will stay here for a long time,” says Twigg.

National champion

The rugby club hopes to quickly find a definitive connection with the Dutch rugby top. National champion RC Eemland came to visit on Saturday. NH Sport was present and made the above report.

Filming was also allowed in the changing rooms. “In these types of matches we find out who is a top team. Today the men are separated from the boys,” Twigg said before the start of the match.
