Bundesliga: drama about Marco Reus overshadows district derby

Marco Reus was apparently seriously injured in the district derby against Schalke 04. The BVB captain had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher after 30 minutes.

For a year, Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 had to do without their beloved duel between arch-rivals from the Ruhr area. After the rise of the Gelsenkirchen team, the Revierderby made a comeback on Saturday (September 17th, 2022) – and it was not the sporting events that made the headlines.

After a fairly uneventful 30 minutes, Marco Reus apparently suffered a serious injury. After a duel, he climbed onto his opponent’s knee as he landed and then unhappily twisted his right ankle. The BVB captain fell to the ground and had to be carried off the field after a long treatment break.

Terzic does not expect a long absence

“His ankle didn’t look so good at first glance. I hope it’s less bad than it looked.”, said BVB central defender Mats Hummels after the game. A diagnosis was initially pending.

According to Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, his captain could have been lucky in his misfortune. “It looks like the ligaments were injured. We don’t yet know how long he’ll be out, so we’ll have to wait for more detailed investigations.”said the coach.

When asked if Reus would be out for about six to eight weeks, Terzic said: “No, we don’t think it will take that long. He’s injured his ankle a few times before.”

Will the next World Cup dream burst?

After strong performances, Reus had recently been able to hope for a squad nomination for the World Cup in Qatar in November.

The 33-year-old has repeatedly been thrown back by injuries in his career. Reus had to celebrate the 2014 World Cup title from the couch due to a syndesmosis ligament rupture, in 2016 Reus missed the EM due to pubic inflammation and he did not attend the EM 2021 out of caution to protect his body.
