He has “initiated a clear development of the team,” say those responsible for HSV. Merlin Polzin is now head coach of the “Rothosen”.
Hamburger SV has officially appointed Merlin Polzin as its new head coach. One day after the convincing 5-0 win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, sports director Stefan Kuntz and sports director Claus Costa decided on the previous interim coach. Polzin is the successor to Steffen Baumgart, from whom the club separated at the end of November.
“In the few weeks of working together, Merlin initiated a clear development of the team,” said Kuntz. “He and his team enjoy our full trust and we want to continue on the path we have chosen with them.” The players also spoke out clearly in favor of Polzin after the win against Fürth.
Since Baumgart’s departure, the Hamburg native has looked after the team in four games, of which HSV won two and drew two. Despite the weak first half of the season of 28 points, the club remains in the tight race for promotion.
Polzin has been closely connected to HSV for years. As a teenager he was in the fan curve, later he began his coaching career in the club’s youth work. After studying and working at VfL Osnabrück, he returned to HSV in 2020 as an assistant coach. Now the 34-year-old is on the sidelines of the second division club for the first time.
