At least 12 dead in fire at Vietnamese karaoke bar | Abroad

At least 12 people have been killed in a fire at a karaoke bar in South Vietnam. Twelve others were injured, a spokesman for the local police told the German news agency Dpa.

The fire broke out for unknown reasons on Tuesday evening in the town of Thuan An, north of central Ho Chi Minh City, and quickly spread to the building’s second and third floors, the VnExpress newspaper reported.

Attempts by restaurant staff to fight the flames with small fire extinguishers were unsuccessful. When the fire also blocked the emergency exits, some visitors jumped from a balcony about seven to eight meters below, the report said. They were injured, but survived.

More than ten fire trucks were deployed to bring the fire under control. On Wednesday, aid workers were still searching the rubble for possible new victims. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
