Did you crash your car into a lamppost, tree or guardrail, for example because it was so slippery on the road on Wednesday? Then it is important to know a number of things. You are obliged to report the damage. This is how it works:
If you collide with a guardrail, lamppost or warning sign, you are always obliged to report it. Firstly, with your car insurance, so that the municipality, province or Rijkswaterstaat can recover the damage. The bill is paid from your insurance. For a small amount, you can choose to pay for the damage out of your own pocket in order to maintain your claim-free years.
You must also report it to the police. If you don’t do that, you become a suspect of a crime. It is a criminal offense to simply leave the scene of an accident, even if there is only material damage and no injuries have been reported.
You must also report this if you damage someone’s car or other property. You must at least leave your details, for example under the windshield wiper.
Of course, even better than reporting is to prevent an accident altogether. The ANWB recommends looking far ahead of you, driving slowly, accelerating slowly and not driving with summer tires.
