After riots and attacks in the past, the Berlin police want to increase their presence again on Halloween night.

Based on the experience of previous years, this is planned for Monday evening in Schöneberg in the Potsdamer-/Pallas- and Goebenstrasse area and in the Gesundbrunnen area, said a police spokesman.

Experience has shown that the police are increasingly called to action in connection with Halloween celebrations. “The focus is often on property damage, bodily harm and disturbances at parties,” said the spokesman. The police want to be on the road with many patrols throughout the city.

Halloween has long been celebrated primarily in the United States. In the meantime, there are also many parties in Germany, and on the evening of October 31, children dressed up go from apartment door to apartment door and call out “tricks or treats” in order to receive sweets. In Berlin, however, young people have also used Halloween to riot and attack the police in recent years.

Last year, young rioters in particular threw firecrackers, bottles and eggs at police officers in several Berlin districts. Cars and a BVG bus were also attacked.

Up to 100 children, adolescents and young men had gathered in Neukölln and loudly insulted the police. It was determined because of breach of the peace, dangerous intervention in road traffic, bodily harm, damage to property and violations of the Explosives Act.
