VVN holds extra long speed check in Drenthe: ‘It is getting out of hand’

From today your speed will be measured at fifty places in the province. If you speed too high, you will not receive a fine, but in this way the Safe Traffic Netherlands (VVN) investigates road safety in the province.

The checks are mainly held within built-up areas. “That’s where most accidents happen,” says Rob Stomphorst of VVN. “Also in combination with provincial roads, of course. People can’t muster the patience if they drive behind a slower vehicle. Then they try to get past it anyway. This often leads to dangerous situations and things just go right. But when things go wrong goes horribly wrong.”

According to Stomphorst, in some cases people drive fast in Drenthe. “The purpose of this check is to gain insight into the extent to which people overwrite the speed. We also did this for a week last year and the results were out of control. We have to limit that. That is why we are now going to do two weeks to check.”

Last June, VVN also carried out such a speed study:
