At Berkendonk swimming pool in Helmond, the police made a remarkable discovery on Wednesday: a self-built underground shelter was located in the woods next to the recreational lake, complete with insulation plates and ventilation pipes. No one was present upon arrival.
The police responded after reports from local residents, who indicated that people were regularly seen at that location in the forest. The shelter was investigated together with the fire brigade. An officer entered the underground space and determined that it was clearly a man-made structure.
The municipality of Helmond has been called in to dismantle the shelter.
