Lighthouse De Lange Jaap is going to be renovated. This was decided by Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Robert Tieman. Research has shown that it is possible to stabilize and renovate the damaged lighthouse, officially the Kijkduin lighthouse.

In 2021, cracks were found in the iconic cast-iron lighthouse. Due to the cracks, the almost 150-year-old lighthouse was no longer safe and had to be closed. In recent years, research has been carried out on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat to determine whether and, if so, how, the cracks can be repaired.

Although not all research has yet been completed, it is now clear that renovating the lighthouse is possible. The condition of the lighthouse will be preserved as much as possible. Rijkswaterstaat will continue to work on the final design in the near future. The renovation is expected to start in the second half of 2026.

“De Lange Jaap is a household name in the area, and more broadly, in the Netherlands. It is wonderful news that it can be retained for the Netherlands,” said Minister Tieman. “I am pleased that with this decision we can put an end to years of uncertainty about the future of this iconic lighthouse.”
