Rosalía: 6 reasons why “Lux” is the best album of the year

When Rosalía announced her new album Lux last month, she described it as an “emotional arc of female mysticism, transformation and transcendence.” Big words – and she kept them all.

The Spanish artist’s work, which has now been published, combines operatic inspirations, collaborations with the London Symphony Orchestra and the singer’s classical training, which has been refined over the years.

ROLLING STONE called “Lux” a “timeless work of art that no other pop artist could have created.”

Classical roots and vocal virtuosity

Rosalía shows her complete classical skills. She is a trained flamenco singer and studied at the renowned ESMUC conservatory in Barcelona, which only accepts one person per year. On “Lux” this discipline can be heard in every note. She works with the London Symphony Orchestra, references Vivaldi and Mozart and was inspired by Puccini’s Tosca. In the piece “Mio Cristo” she wanted, as she said, to “create her own aria.”

Linguistic world tour through 14 languages

In an interview with The New York Times, Rosalía revealed that she sings in 14 languages on Lux. These include Spanish, Catalan, Latin, Italian, Ukrainian, Japanese, Arabic, Sicilian, Mandarin, Hebrew, Portuguese and French. She worked with translators to ensure correct pronunciation, but refused any AI help. The result: a human, tangible art of language in which she switches effortlessly between idioms.

Settlement with the ex

In the song “La Perla,” Rosalía and Yahritza (Yahritza y Su Esencia) mercilessly settle accounts with a self-absorbed ex. “A national heartthrob,” “an emotional terrorist.” The lush strings underscore lines about a man “who spends money he doesn’t have” and “doesn’t understand loyalty.” Many fans think she means her ex-fiancé Rauw Alejandro. But the emotional catharsis is crucial.

Pharrell track finally released

The long-circulating Pharrell Williams song “De Madrugá”, originally written during El Mal Querer, has finally found its place on “Lux” – with new lyrics and orchestral depth. Rosalía even includes a line in Ukrainian: “I’m not looking for revenge.” The piece combines elegantly with the symphonic atmosphere of the album.

Exclusive vinyl edition with bonus tracks

The physical version of Lux contains three additional songs. In “Focu ‘Ranni” Rosalía sings about freedom in Sicilian. “I will never be your half, never your property.” “Jeanne” is a Franco-Spanish ballad about self-destruction, while “Novia Robot” takes the perspective of an imaginary sex robot who sings in Mandarin and Hebrew about divine self-determination: “I dress for God, not for you.”

About love, loss and a broken wedding promise

After her public engagement to Rauw Alejandro in “Beso,” a wedding seemed certain. Until the sudden separation. In “Focu ‘Ranni” she deals with the ceremony that didn’t take place. “No one will throw rice into the sky, no one will bring flowers.” She references her tattoo with his name before singing, “I belong only to me. And my freedom.”
