Donald Glover has revealed he suffered a stroke in 2024. He shared the news on Saturday during a performance at “Camp Flog Gnaw” at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
He said he was in the middle of his New World tour and was having “a lot of fun,” but then: “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I still did the show. I couldn’t really see well. When we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor said, ‘You had a stroke,'” Glover told the audience last night, as fan-recorded livestream footage shows.
“And the first thing I thought was, ‘Oh, like, here I am, still copying Jamie Foxx.’ This was really like second thought. The first thought was, ‘I’m letting everyone down.'”
Health revelations and operations
He added that he also broke his foot, “and they found a hole in my heart. So I had that surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.”
However, the health challenges led to an added appreciation for embracing the time you have, and Glover shared that perspective with the crowd. “So, you know, they say… everyone has two lives, and the second life begins when you realize you have one. You have one life, people,” he said, adding, “You should live your life the way you want.”
Tour dates canceled due to health problems
In September of last year, Glover was forced to postpone the remainder of his Childish Gambino tour to “focus on my health,” as the rapper announced at the time. In October 2024, he said that he was undergoing surgery for an unspecified medical condition and canceled the remainder of his tour. He had not publicly disclosed the details until his appearance at Camp Flog Gnaw last night.
