Tanks at the Soviet memorial covered with Ukraine flags

Two World War II tanks at the Soviet memorial near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin have each been draped with a large Ukrainian flag.

Police officers removed the flags believed to be a protest against Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Wednesday morning.

Nothing was damaged and the flags could have been removed without any problems, said a police spokesman. First of all, therefore, do not assume a criminal offense.

It is not yet known who put the flags there on Wednesday night.

The Soviet memorial in Tiergarten on Straße des 17. Juni commemorates the Soviet soldiers who died in World War II.

In the middle is a large statue of a soldier, with historical tanks on either side. The graves of around 2,500 soldiers lie in the rear part. Another and much larger Soviet memorial is located in Treptower Park.
