Borussia Dortmund reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup in dramatic fashion. It went to penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt.
High tension in Frankfurt: The top game of the second round of the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening ended with a dramatic penalty shootout. After this, Borussia Dortmund is in the round of 16 of the competition. Eintracht Frankfurt, on the other hand, was eliminated. Ritsu Dōan and Farès Chaïbi lost their nerve from the spot. BVB ultimately prevailed 4-2.
After 120 minutes the score was 1-1. Ansgar Knauff took the lead for Frankfurt after just seven minutes. Shortly after the break, BVB hit back through Julian Brandt (48th).
The 59,300 spectators in the stands in the Frankfurt stadium created a great cup atmosphere, and the players on the pitch followed suit. Eintracht threw themselves into many duels and immediately showed their presence. The guests initially looked for a way forward with speed in their own possession of the ball.
But Frankfurt did it better. As the ex-Dortmund team played together, Mario Götze sent Knauff deep with a fantastic pass, who stayed cool in front of Gregor Kobel and shocked his youth club.
The hit dampened Dortmund’s efforts and there was little offensive afterwards. The game remained intense and characterized by many duels. Eintracht appeared aggressive and prevented Dortmund from scoring goals, but were rarely dangerous themselves. Shots from Ritsu Dōan (38th) and Arthur Theate (40th) were parried by Kobel.
BVB found their way back into the game with their best combination. Jobe Bellingham fed Julian Ryerson on the wing, whose cross reached Brandt at the back post. He scored unchallenged and kissed his team awake. When it was created, Maximilian Beier was offside, but the video assistant is only available in the cup from the round of 16 onwards.
However, Frankfurt again slowed down the offensive efforts with good duels. A completely open exchange of blows developed. Knauff (69th) and Robin Koch (70th) missed the chance to take the lead. Eintracht pressed, Dortmund were lucky when Dōan hit the crossbar (80′), and Kobel held strong again against substitute Can Uzun (81′).
In extra time, Frankfurt, egged on by the tireless fans, pushed forward more; Jonathan Burkardt’s goal did not count due to offside (115′). The decision from that point had to be made. At BVB, all shooters converted. Dōan again chased the ball over the goal on the Frankfurt side. Chaïbi failed because of Kobel. The end of unity was sealed. BVB was able to celebrate again.
