World Cup qualification

Blamage in Bratislava: DFB-Elf collects historical bankruptcy

04.09.2025 – 10:39 p.m.Reading time: 1 min.

The start of the qualification for the 2026 World Cup becomes a very bitter evening for the German national team. In the end there is a result for the history books.

The German national team had certainly imagined it very differently: At the start of the qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the DFB team surprisingly lost 0: 2 (0: 1) in Slovakia. It is a historical defeat for the four-time world champion: Germany had not yet lost in 52 away games in the World Cup qualification.

Dávid Hancko (42nd) and David Strelec (55th) met on Thursday evening to deserve the host’s deserved victory against an offensive harmless and defensively temporarily indisposed team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Even more: the German team was temporarily shown and was lucky that the defeat would not be even higher.
