The Moorish Muurgekko that was found this weekend in the Jumbo distribution center in Veghel between a load of fruit is at De Oliemeulen Zoo in Tilburg in Quarantaine. The animals are not strangers for the animal park: two more arrived last week.

The Moorish wall gecko has a gray with brown color and is originally from southern Europe and northern Africa. The animal is found more often in the Netherlands. “Last week we received three,” says Marijn van Harrewijn, animal caretaker at De Oliemeulen Zoo. “We see that especially during the holiday season. They come unnoticed in suitcases from holidaymakers. Through fruit shipments it doesn’t happen often.”

Between fruit
The Gekko was noticed by employees of the Jumbo distribution center in Veghel. They put him in a bowl, after which the animal ambulance picked up the Gekko and brought him to the Oliemeulen animal park. The animal can strengthen there.

Marijn does not know exactly where the animal comes from. “My suspicion is southern Europe, but it is unknown where the load of fruit came from.”

Quarantine
The Gekko will be in quarantine for the next sixty to ninety days. “This way we know for sure that he is not sick or carries parasites with him and we protect the other animals.” The animal carers keep a close eye on the animal and regularly feed it. “He probably had a big journey and we want it to be on weight. Fortunately, he still looked pretty big on arrival. I think he could find enough insects to eat between the fruit.”

After the quarantine period, the oil feers looks at whether the animal stays in Tilburg or will be replaced to another location.

Name
The Gekko, which can be about 12 to 16 centimeters long, has not yet been given a name. “Jumbo would be an appropriate,” says Marijn with a smile. “In any case, I am happy with it; Another extra animal to take care of.”
