After the 2-1 win over Hansa Rostock, Essen Coach Uwe Koschinat changed his starting line-up in one position: After his yellow lock, Klaus Gjasula returned to the central midfield and replaced Torben.

RWE caught dream start

RWE took the lead with the first chance of the game – and benefited from a carver of the Cottbus defensive. Essen’s Safi (3rd) sprinted in between Niko Bretschneider in a too short back pass, turned around the brain defender Dennis Slamar and lifted the ball into the goal over Cottbus keeper Elias Bethke.

Cottbus continued to come into play, Essen remained the more dangerous and stronger team. After a steep pass from Ahmet Arslan, Safi (29th) ran towards Bethke alone, but the Cottbus goalkeeper intervened and prevented a higher deficit. Shortly before the half-time break, Jose-Enrique Rios-Alonso (43.) also missed the second Essen goal when he headed just past the left post after a corner by Lucas Brumme.

Cottbus doesn’t think of much

The first good chance after the half -time break belonged to Cottbus. Bretschneider flanked in the middle of Timmy Thiele (51st), whose flight headball sailed past the goal. In the course of the second half, the level flattened a bit: Cottbus was still lacking ideas on the offensive, Essen increasingly concentrated on the defensive. After a flank from Hasse, Thiele (70th) came to the header again, but did not get enough pressure on it. Even in the final phase, energy remained lucky in front of the opposing gate.

Now eat against Aue

Already on Saturday (2 p.m.) RWE continues with a home game against Erzgebirge Aue. Cottbus will compete at Borussia Dortmund II on Sunday (4.30 p.m.).
