Beijing (AP) – China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping has promised exciting Winter Olympics in Beijing. “China is ready,” the president said in a video message for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session ahead of the Games on Friday.
“We will work to provide the world with a simple, safe and exciting Olympic event that lives up to the Olympic motto ‘faster, higher, stronger – together’,” he was quoted as saying by state television. China is a staunch supporter of Olympic ideals.
Beijing is the first city to host both Summer and Winter Games. Due to the corona pandemic, the competitions, which last until February 20, are taking place under extremely strict precautionary measures. All participants can only move in closed circuits, have no contact with the country and people outside and have to be tested daily.
